Aya Water Project

Location

Aya Health Centre III, Moyo District, Uganda

Project Completion Date

September 2026

Method

Rehabilitation of Existing Water Supply System

Project Goal

Restore reliable access to water for Aya Health Centre III, health workers, nearby schools, and the surrounding community, benefiting 2,651 people across 580 households.

WIHA x Pipeline Worldwide Partnership

Aya Health Centre III and the surrounding community were experiencing unreliable access to water after the existing water system's pump stopped functioning. This affected the health facility, staff quarters, nearby schools, and community water access.

To restore this essential service, WIHA partnered with Pipeline Worldwide to rehabilitate the existing water supply system rather than construct a new one. The project focused on replacing the malfunctioning pump and restoring the water distribution system throughout the facility and surrounding community.

Restoring the Water System

The project replaced the malfunctioning pump with a new, appropriately sized pump and restored the water distribution system at Aya Health Centre III. The system was then tested and commissioned to ensure reliable operation.

Water Access for the Community

Water access was restored to the health workers' staff quarters and three community water tap stands. The project also improved access to water for neighboring schools, extending the benefits of the rehabilitated system beyond the health facility.

Health, Hygiene and Well-Being

Reliable water is essential for patient care, handwashing, cleaning, sanitation, and infection prevention at Aya Health Centre III. For families and nearby schools, improved access also helps reduce the time and effort required to collect water.

From Assessment to Completion

The project began with an assessment of the existing water system and the challenges affecting its operation. Rather than replacing the entire system, the rehabilitation approach focused on restoring the infrastructure already in place.

The malfunctioning pump was replaced, the water distribution system was restored, and water connections were re-established for the health center, staff quarters, community tap stands, and nearby schools.

Following installation, the system was tested and commissioned, bringing the Aya Water Supply System back into service.

Sustaining the Impact

The restored water system provides a stronger foundation for reliable water access at Aya Health Centre III and throughout the surrounding community. Continued maintenance, community stewardship, and coordination with local partners will help sustain the system for years to come. Through its partnership with Pipeline Worldwide, WIHA helped restore an essential water source for patients, health workers, students, and families—bringing water back to where it is needed most.
